Chicago Tribune: "Tiny Pie Hits the Spot"

Follow this link to a nice article on Tiny Pie from the Chicago Tribune:

http://www.chicagotribune.com/site/ct-prj-0609-tiny-pie-mark-bailey-michael-oatman-20130610,0,7872257.story

Here is an excerpt from that article:

"Tiny Pie" is a gorgeous children's book meant for kids ages 3-6, but it's the sort of book adults will smile over, too. It follows Ellie, a pint-sized elephant, as she stumbles into a hole in the kitchen wall where a colony of mice are televising a cooking show. The mice make Ellie a tiny apple pie.

Kids Love Bad Apple

Some adult reviewers have mentioned being a bit turned off by the worm/apple aspect of Bad Apple but luckily there are children to read children's books.

Check out this very charming piece on how at least some children react:

Nice Bad Apple Mention in The School Library Journal

Here is the part about Bad Apple:

I think we have plenty of mismatched friend picture books out there but I’ll admit that I sometimes have a problem with titles where a predator is best friends with their food source.  It always makes me think of thatFashion Kitty moment where FK mentions that her cat family has a pet mouse, which would be the human equivalent of have a chocolate cake as a pet. “I love you, but I wish I could eat you.”  That’s part of the reason why I was so pleased to see Bad Apple: A Tale of Friendship by Edward Hemingway.  It’s a mismatched friend tale, sure, but not in a predator/prey way . . . or is it?  The story concentrates on Mac (smart name) an apple who befriends Will, the worm in his head.  Unfortunately apples with worms don’t make for the most popular fruits, and Mac is quickly shunned as “rotten”.  It’s cute.  Sort of a metaphor, I suppose.  Worth checking out.

Reference to the Bad Apple Video

A blogger at the School Library Journal has linked to the Bad Apple promotional video with following blurb:

So in other book trailer news, the grandson of Ernest Hemingway is friends with the lead singer of The Donnas.  Why am I telling you this?  Because in the great wide world of children’s literature it all comes together into a perfect whole.  Book trailer-wise anyway.  Observe and enjoy the latest trailer by Edward Hemingway for his upcoming picture book about an apple and his best friend.  And the music is by the aforementioned Donna, Brett.

Ed on Panel of Judges; Contest Ends Sept 7 ,2008

Found this item at Mlive.Com, which is about a contest in Michigan. Ed is on the panel of judges. Here is a snippet of the article:

"We have three wonderful judges: Steve Klein, editor of the Huron River Press; Joe Borri, a (Detroit) artist and writer; and Edward Hemingway, Ernest's grandson, who is himself a children's book illustrator. "This is a great opportunity for high school artists to have their work looked at by professionals," concludes Agnew, "get some exposure locally (we're picking five finalists and plan to use the images for display); and (have) a great thing to have in a portfolio if they're going to art school."

Bump Summary from a Catalog

Some catalog in Brazil had this to say about Bump:

BUMP IN THE NIGHT by Edward Hemingway, illustrated by Edward Hemingway, Putnam, 06/08

Billy's dreams of the fun he'll have with his teddy and dog the next day are interrupted by a bump in the night. He is a little scared; worrying about ghoulies and ghosties and long-leggedy beasties, but the last monster that appears in his room isn't scary at all. He's a yo-yo using, horseback-riding, ghoulie-scaring, beastie-ropin' monster who's perfect to take on adventures (and he's sensitive - he gives Billy his teddy back when Billy cries). ($15.99 US; $19.00 CAN; 8½ x 9½; 32 pages; Ages 3-5)

Selling Points:

* Literary pedigree: Eddie is Ernest Hemingway's grandson.

* Positive twist on classic fear: Encourages kids to have fun with their imagination and make friends with your monsters!

* There's a Nightmare in my Closet mixed with Where the Wild Things Are: Plays with kids imaginary fears and adventures in similar ways.

* Author's Profile: Eddie Hemingway has a Bachelors degree from the Rhode Island School of Design and Masters from The School of Visual Arts. His illustrations have appeared in Nickelodeon Magazine, GQ, Gourmet, The New York Times and more.
